Today I’ll be learning you how to make a mobile phone advertisement. Inspired by the big and fancy designs you see on billboards and stuff. This is what I came up with, an advertisement for the Sony Ericsson K610i:

Now read on, and follow me through this this tutorial!

1. We start off by searching a neat and pretty high res image of a mobile phone.
Found a mobile phone that has a big enough resolution, you go to Photoshop and open a new document (Ctrl+N or File > New). I’m going for 12001600, you just see where the phone best fits in.
And if you want to do it bigger, go for it. But remember that it will load more slowly (if your pc isn’t that fast), the higher you go. But ofcourse, than you can go more into detail.
Choose a color for the Background layer, I chose a light blue/grey. Pick the Ellipse Tool (U), make an oval form with it and transform it over whole of the image.

2. Go to the Blending Options of the shape layer (Right Mouse Button > Blending Options), Fill Opacity: 0%, than press Gradient Overlay and fill in the folowwing options:
Blend Mode: Overlay, Opacity: 45%, Gradient: White to Transparant, Style: Radial. Now you move the gradient until it hits the side of the circle with the middle of the gradient.

3. You place the phone into the document, and free transfrom (Ctrl+T or Edit > Free Transform) until the image fits in the document.
If it has only one background color it’s most handy, just pick the Magic Wand Tool (W), click on the background color and press the ‘Add Layer Mask’.

4. Now that you’ve cut out the phone press the layer back on and go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen. Go to Blending Options, Outer Glow and do the following things:
Blend Mode: Overlay, Opacity: 25%, Noise: 0%, pick a color that you want that glows out of the phone very subtle and Size: 250px.

5. Now go find yourself a field of grass, good free stock images can be found on stock.xchng. Put it in the document on top of the phone and add a Layer Mask.
Make sure the mask is filled completely with black. Now pick a big Soft Brush (B) and paint white on the mask underneath the phone and a bit on it.

6. Find yourself some beautiful flowers, put them in the document and get rid of the background so you only keep the flowers.
Do this by giving it a Layer Mask, picking a Hard Brush (B) and painting the background away.
You can also use the Pen Tool (P), tutorial if you don’t know how it works > http://www.heathrowe.com/tuts/pathsmadeeasy.asp.
Or if your lucky and they have a flat background color, the Magic Wand Tool (W).
Use the Blur Tool (R) where you think it’s needed, to create more depth.

7. Now if you’re finished doing that, go to Filter > Convert For Smart Filter. The mask will disappear, but you can always still change the mask by double clicking the layer (on the layer palette).
Transform (Ctrl+T) and put it on the bottom of the phone.
And now the magic of Smart Filters/Object, you will always be able to transform it back to the original image as you’ve putted it in.
Go to Filter>Sharpen>Sharpen and do this twice (second time you can also use Ctrl+F), you’ll see that underneath the layer in the layer palette stands twice Sharpen at the end of the Sharpens you see an icon with two arrows.
Click the one of the first Sharpen and box will pop up, Mode: Normal and Opacity: 50%. Now the opacity of the second Sharpen filter will be 50%, the awesomeness of Smart Filters. Which is a new feature in CS3.

8. Change the blending options.
Outer Glow, Blend Mode: Overlay, Opacity: 75%, Color: Black, Size: 90px (depends on what size you’re working on).
Color Overlay (I just wanted to give the flowers a red color), Blend Mode: Overlay, Color: Red, Opacity: 35%.

9. Find yourself more flowers, plants & fun stuff and repeat the same process as from the flower. I picked two bunch of red flowers for the background flowers, and in the front some blue ones.
Didn’t convert them to Smart Filters, sharpened them right on the layer.
It’s best to only use Smart filters/object when you’re not sure of the size, filters, etc.
Also found a ladybird and putted it on one of the flowers.

You can also do some fun stuff with clouds and air balloons, put plants behind the phone, etc. Just give it a go until you think you’re happy with it!
10. For the finishing I used some brushes, like splatter brushes and vector brushes for behind the phone.

And also made my own brush to add that sparkly stuff.
Pick the Brush Tool (B), go to Window > Brushes (F5) and do the following things.
Brush Tip Shape: Pick a hard brush with a Diameter of 35px, Hardness 35% and Spacing 25%
Shape Dynamics: Minimum Diameter 100%
Scattering: Scatter 600%
Other Dynamics: Opacity Jitter 85%

Now put the Opacity of that brush on 45%, create a layer behind the phone layer, and you’ll see you’ve got to click only once to get that sparkly effect.
I used white color for the brush and put the blending mode of the layer on Soft Light, also two other ones with blue and red color with the blending mode of their layers on Overlay.

11. Almost finished! As you can see on the finished advertisement I made some crazy lines, or however you name it, to put on the flowers. Made that with Illustrator, but putted them specially for this tutorial in a brush pack. Download them here.
Make a new layer and put the blend mode on Overlay, use white color and put them somewhere on the flowers, make a Layer mask and where the lines stop use a black Soft Brush to make it fade out.

Now for the last finishing touches. Put on a big ass title, I used Cicle font, and the Sony Ericsson logo.

The result will be something like this:
