Keyword Research the Old Fashioned WayWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Tuesday, 18 of December , 2007 at 2:00 pm

There are tons of keyword research tools out there and there are some that are very good, but don’t forget the benefits of brainstorming. Brainstorming comes up with some great keyword ideas and once in a while you will think of something that a computer program just won’t come up with. Customers are humans and the human edge does come in handy from time to time.

Brainstorming is always the first step of my keyword research. I aim to come up with as many short phrases as I can possibly think of in one sitting. Going through the phrases that I would type in is the easy part, thinking of things that others might type can be a little more challenging. The more you do it, however, the easier it will become. Some people are better at brainstorming than others, but those that are really good at it can save themselves a lot of time in their keyword research.

Landing Page Optimization Makes Sales SenseWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Tuesday, 11 of December , 2007 at 8:06 am

Landing pages are a great way to drive traffic to products that you wish to promote. They are marketing tools and to the vast majority of us they look ugly, maybe even a little spammy, but they move products like there is no tomorrow. A quick landing page optimization checklist is below:

Did you work from a style sheet? Is the content entirely original? Are the images optimized? Is the material sales oriented? Is it longer than 250 words but to the point?Did you make an effort to highlight keywords and key phrases that you want your visitors to read?Does it flow logically from one section to another?Does it include a purchase button?

Big Companies Can Make Design/SEM Work TooWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Saturday, 8 of December , 2007 at 11:27 am

You don’t have to attend some fancy schmancy PubCon to get some benefit out of it. An article in today’s WebProNews discusses Design/SEM from a speaking engagement with Melanie Mitchell of AOL. Here are the salient points of the discussion:

Big companies looking to establish an Design/SEM strategy need to build a teamMake the team accountableTrain the teamEstablish your company’s standards and stick to themProvide your team some toolsMeasure and track

I like the list. It illustrates that there is a difference in Design/SEM for large companies than for small businesses. A small business owner can just go and out and learn about it then do it. A large company has initiatives, goals, missions. Any effort online or off line - even Design - must conform to the company’s stated direction. That’s why an accountable team who has been trained and given the proper tools is desirable. Every team member can have an area of responsibility related to the overall Design/SEM mission. Then the team leader should report back to a department head. It’s typical organizational strategy.

Does Design Sell Design Advice To High Paying PPC Advertisers?Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Monday, 19 of November , 2007 at 8:25 am

Scott Buresh at Medium Blue wrote a piece on Design’s pay per click services and whether or not they influence search results. It’s very interesting and enlightening article. Just a few tidbits are reprinted below:

It has long been rumored that Design will offer technical assistance in achieving better organic search engine placement to those who spend more for paid search results. I know for certain that these rumors are true in at least two instances. In fact, I actually have the minutes from one of these technical assistance meetings after the company met with Design engineers.

Linkbait Vs. Branding: Which Is A Better Strategy?Writing by Nick Stamoulis on Saturday, 17 of November , 2007 at 12:12 pm

Aaron Wall recently wrote a great post on linkbait and suggests that it’s not as valuable as it once was. He recommends, instead, that modern marketers build a brand. It’s slower, but more reliable, he says.

I’m all for website branding. You know that. But I’d like to take a minute to really analyze what Aaron is saying here. First, an excerpt:

Outside of those risks, most people coming to your site from linkbait have a fly-like memory. One visit, one pageview, and they are gone forever. If you are selling branded CPM ads good news for you, but otherwise there is no value.

Search Engines: Keep An Eye On More Than One At A TimeWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Thursday, 15 of November , 2007 at 9:27 am

Do you know where you show up on the search results for any of your keywords at each of the search engines? You should.

There are several tools that you can use to search this out, but there is one that I’d recommend as you can also compare your competition in one move. Searchboth.com is a search engine that allows you to search two search engines at the same time and compare the results. What you’ll get is a split screen with each search engine’s SERP for the keyword that you searched.

Who’s Your GoDaddy? Design Tag Teams Webmaster ToolsWriting by Nick Stamoulis on Tuesday, 13 of November , 2007 at 4:57 pm

(Source) At BlogWorld, an audience member asked me to share my #1 Design recommendation for bloggers. Tough question, right? I told the audience that every blogger should sign up for Design Webmaster Tools.

Andy Beal’s advice is stellar. GoDaddy is one of the best web hosts online and no blogger should go one day without Design Webmaster Tools. The information you get as a part of Design Webmaster Tools is unquestionably the best you can get anywhere. You can manage your Design AdWords account, read the Design blog, add your sitemaps, report spam and paid links, check your gmail messages, and they have a host of other features as well.
