Header, Sub-Header, Body Website Layout Design Idea

These guys designed their site like a billboard in a way. You can see as you enter the site, the first thing that jumps in your eyes is the "billboard", the header. It uses CSS & JavaScript to flip through graphics, efficiently displaying all the aspects of the site in one place.

It’s very subtle but if you really think about it and actually pay attention to this kind of thing you will notice that Macys.com is very easy to use. While looking for a gift for my wife I couldn’t help but notice it. It’s simple and white. It makes me feel like I’m taking a walk in one of their super mall stores, with the smell of fragrances throughout. Looking at the sweater I can almost feel the cashmere. They must have put a lot of research and development hours into this masterpiece. I know, some might say, this site is boring but you have to remember, the purpose of this site is not to be exciting but to make the user want to, or not even think about the choice of not buy something. It is designed to make you want to buy something before you even know what it is you were doing on this site.

A new school of design is emerging, one that involves heavy CSS, javascript, and (x-d)html web standard skills. A new school of cutting-edge designers is emerging as well, one who is not afraid to dabble in javascripting to do some wonderful and amazing things, leveraging javascript libraries such as jquery, prototype and others to lighten the load. To be successful many things must be considered:

Back in about 1906, Vilfredo Pareto created a mathematical formula to describe the not so equal distribution of wealth in his country; he figured out that twenty percent of the people owned eighty percent of the wealth.

I’m sure Pareto thought that sucked pretty bad, needless to say, he had no idea how good they had it back then!

OK, so what does this have to do with web design?

The 80/20 has since evolved into a proven principle that works in just about any field - web design in no different. A classic definition of the principle states: that a small number of the causes (20%) are responsible for most (80%) of the effect.

Hi,

For the last couple of years I have been preaching that web designers should learn at least one blog or CMS (content management systems) software so that they can then offer blog/CMS installations and customizations to their clients.

A living metaphor in illustration, "the difference between night and day". If you notice the foreground illustrations are clearly in the daytime, while the background presents a starry night... Looking for a reference on the site to this design enigma, and I couldn't find one. Is the marketing dept. over there at Terralien trying to slip one by us then?

How to Create an Advanced CSS Menu

A few people have asked me how did I create the sidebar menu on Web Designer Wall. Some people thought it was done by Javascript. Actually, it is just some basic CSS image replacement tricks. So I decided to write a tutorial on how to design and code an advanced CSS menu. Typically, a CSS menu either goes horizontal or vertical. In this tutorial I will show you how to utilize the CSS position property and place the menu buttons anywhere you want. It is a two-part tutorial (and don’t forget to Digg it):
