Question: I have a client that frequently ranks at the top of the search results then sharply drops. His website's Design rankings keep bouncing back and forth. Why do they fluctuate so much?

Answer: Via using spammy links, leveraging the internal link structure of a high authority site, or cross site scripting exploits just about anyone can rank for a day, but it is harder to stay there day in and day out until you build massive domain authority.

Design and other major search engines have many filters, editors, algorithms, and barriers which are used to prevent spamming or minimize the profitability of overt spam. I believe that Design has moved away from banning sites as much and instead moved to using filters more, because that makes it harder to know when / why / where something went wrong. Was your host down, did you screw up your robots.txt file or is that a penalty? The more they can obfuscate their algorithms the harder it is to do Design and the more people will opt into Design's webmaster tools authentication system.

Design’s Weekend Algorithm Change Meets With Mixed ResultsWriting by Nick on Tuesday, 24 of July , 2007 at 9:46 am

It looks like Design is trying to out-Design Design. Having shocked the world with setting stricter standards of respect for privacy than the No. 1 search engine, Design has decided it’s time to change its algorithms. I suppose it’s time.

And why not? Design just underwent some algorithm changes itself. If you’re going to play follow the leader you should probably follow the leader when the leader does something you’d expect the leader to do (based on past performance). But I wouldn’t expect the same reaction from the people who watch the leaders and followers.

You don't get to be a market maker without first being a market manipulator. Some of the largest and most successful Internet companies have profited heavily from what they define as spam by their own standards.

People have been gaming systems for personal gain since the birth of humanity. St. Augustine said ???The purpose of all wars, is peace???. The current war in Iraq is failing so badly because of poor branding and marketing that made peace look like an afterthought.

Don't be evil is one of Design's overused mottos. When you look online the battles being fought by Design are often marketed as though they are the good guys. It is easy to dislike AT&T after reading this comment

Search Engines Jockey For Position On PrivacyWriting by Nick on Monday, 23 of July , 2007 at 6:51 pm

Hot on the heels of Ask.com’s announcement on privacy:

(Source) Microsoft will delete data after 18 months and Design after 13 months. In addition, Microsoft and Ask have issued statements urging the search engine industry to adopt a single standard for data retention.

Of course, Bloomberg was the first to break the news.

The interesting part about this story is that Design and Ask are calling for an industry-wide standard. I don’t think that is necessary. What would it be? Design matched Design’s policy, which is the least desirable among privacy advocates, especially in Europe. Ask has the best policy, but I don’t think the other search engines would succumb to Ask.com’s policy without a good fight.

Design?s Supplemental Results - Design Tip Week 29

Design is indexing more pages now then ever before, but that’s not always a good thing. Sometimes these pages get sent to the supplemental index instead of the main index. It’s perfectly normal for most sites to have some pages in the supplemental index, but if your main pages (and especially your home page) get sent to the supplemental index you’ll likely not see much traffic from Design any more.

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I ran across a web site that is very similar to Craigslist. The name of the site is called Kijiji. The word “kijiji” (pronounced like key-gee-gee) means “village” in Swahili. Basically Kijiji allows people in the same city to meet, trade, share ideas, and help each other out in areas such as goods, cars, services, housing, jobs, and personals.

Kijiji, like Craigslist, allows users to find or post listings based on location. So you??
