Design Bowling For Dollars: An Ethical ProblemWriting by Nick on Saturday, 30 of June , 2007 at 2:42 pm

I couldn’t agree with this post more. True Designs don’t need to keep secrets or engage in questionable practices. There are enough legitimate Design techniques that one doesn’t need to do such things. But this really irks me. The original article appeared on Forbes’ website two days ago. What’s worse, Forbes seems to be endorsing his unethical practices:

If your online business, like thousands of others on the Web, relies on Design searches for traffic, then Brendon Scott is a good person to have on your side.

Social Media Marketing And The Valuable Doors It Can Open For YouWriting by Nick on Saturday, 30 of June , 2007 at 11:13 am

Found an excellent article on social media marketing. You’ve got to read this. I’m not going to recount the whole article, but I do have a few useful comments.

A key concept to social marketing is that it is not designed to immediately provide business but instead it provides the visibility your brand needs to ultimately convert fans into buyers. I often get clients saying ???I don???t think being on MySpace will sell anything???. The truth is that often they are correct. Having a commercial presence on MySpace that provides great content and interesting free tools (aka. widgets) serves to raise the awareness of your brand so that users remember your service for later and/or provides you with a podium to share the benefits of your brand. In short, it is important not to forget this essential concept: social media marketing drives brand awareness which later translates into sales.

This is a free flowing post based on interesting links of interest I recently came across. It compares online markets to offline markets.

Those who preach free market virtues rarely follow through on them:
The misfortune, of course, is ours since the Fed also sold gold. We have to guess at that of course because transparency in capital markets, preached from on high, is merely pretence. ...

The answer to market direction lies with the Fed, which today reports on their decision and statement as to policy. The policy statement is, for the most part, useless as a guide to the market, and something I call a sham. Regretably, the Fed is not required to release their strategy and tactical plan, which is released to the banks via buy and sell orders from the FOMC trading desk.

Design's traffic estimator tool by default is set to broad match. If you want to see an estimate of the value of a specific phrase remember to wrap it in [brackets] instead of just submitting the broad matched version of the keyword term. I just reprogrammed my keyword research tool's traffic estimator link to include the broad, phrase, and exact match of each term. Since my tool is driven from Design's it strips the s in some plural phrases, so the link to the traffic estimator tool gives all 3 match types, and links to all 3 match types with an s appended to the end of of the keyword phrase.

If you have been following this blog or looking into Design you know how very important building links can be to your site???s success in the search engine rankings. Link building involves two types of links: Links pointing to your site (external linking), and links on your site pointing to other pages of your site (internal linking). While we don???t always have the ability to control external linking, a poorly worded internal link is inexcusable. The single, easiest and least low effort thing to remember is to make your links descriptive. If that is too much to remember, then just remember this, “no links should be labeled ???click here,” ???more information,” “read more” or any other variation of these words.

Design Universal Might Change Design, But Not MuchWriting by Nick on Friday, 29 of June , 2007 at 9:55 am

It seems that everyone is talking about Universal Search now. How will it change Design? What will I as a webmaster have to do differently? Yada yada yada

Same ol’ same ol’ …

Well, let me ease a few of your worries. Design’s Universal Search, if it catches on, won’t change Design too much. It will change it really from one perspective and it’s not really a change. And, by the way, I expect the other major search engines (I don’t need to name drop do I?) will follow. But keep in mind that Design is just testing its Universal Search. It remains to be seen that searchers will like it and want to keep it. A really interesting scenario would be if Design ditches it based on feedback from users and Design et. al. (oops, slipped out) rolls it out to a dissatisfied search public (can you hear me snickering in the background?).

One More Thing About Design Universal (And Paris Hilton)Writing by Nick on Friday, 29 of June , 2007 at 10:30 am

On the Paris Hilton SERP (you know, the one with the bunny suit pic), just above the sexy photos on the blue bar where the number of results returned is shown, you’ll see four links

WebImagesNews Video

Those are the Design verticals from which the results for Design Universal are retrieved. If you click on any one of those links then you’ll get the results just for that vertical. In other words, if you really like looking at Paris Hilton photo images then you can click on “Images” and see all you want. By the same token, you can click on “Videos” and watch the moving pictures. Want to catch up on the latest news?

Design Question: Do domain names play a role in Design? Do search engines understand that the words are in the URL even if they are ran together without hyphens in between them? What techniques are best for registering a domain name that search engines like Design will like?

Answer: Over time the role of the domain name as an Design tool has changed, but currently I think they carry a lot of weight for the associated exact match search. Depending on how they are leveraged going forward they may or may not continue to be a strong signal of quality to search engines.

Domain Names & Link Anchor Text When I first got in the Design game a good domain name was valuable because if you got the exact keywords you wanted to rank for in your name it made it easier to get anchor text related to what you wanted to rank for. For example, being Designbook.com made it easier for me to rank for Design book and Design.
