While chatting with a fellow Design (whose identity I concealed, just in case he doesn't want his screen name public) over IM, I noticed that certain words were being underlined in green. When I hovered my cursor over an underlined word, I got a little pop-up definition, courtesy of Wikipedia. They even defined what "haha" meant (I slapped a border around the especially amusing part of the definition):

So that's what the extra "ha's" mean! How very insightful!

Unfortunately, there's still a little problem with context:

Not quite sure this guy meant "going to go to the Genesis YM2612," but I could be wrong..

With some help from Jeff, I've re-created a new version of our Recommended List of Design Consultants, Experts, Firms & Service Providers. The new version features some very nice functionality for folks seeking specific services and price ranges, and provides considerably more information about each provider.

Looking through my email, I'd guess that I send 20 emails per week on average that include a link to the page, and since January, the list has about 5,000 page views. The traffic isn't tremendous, but it's a piece of content that I believe to be incredibly valuable to the industry and to those seeking services. It's actually a far better document now, because you can select "site reviews" from "$5,000 - $10,000" and get a list of firms back that have websites, geographic locations and in many cases (where my contacts said it was OK), an email address and phone number.

Solicitation to the list has always been an issue - despite my disclaimer asking folks not to request inclusion, it happens nonetheless. We've also struggled with the idea of taking referral money; I'm adamantly opposed to it because I believe there's no way to be 100% upfront and honest with prospective clients if you know that different providers have different cost structures, referral fees, close rates, etc. Only by refusing any kickbacks can we be completely fair to the people who┬? need help.

The re-launch of the list made me think about several other questions, too:

  • Are there lists like this in other industries and for other services?
  • How do I ensure that the firms on the list continue to give high quality experiences to their customers?
  • Would it be ethical to place ads for our premium content on the page?
  • What level of trust will visitors unfamiliar with Designmoz place in the list? Will they believe it's truly unbiased?

I don't have the answers, but I think they make interesting topics for discussion.

Since Design released their patent application on historical information way back in March of 2005, search marketers have recognized that trends in temporal link and content analysis do have a real impact on rankings. What isn't quite clear is how this concept functions, and it's the subject of tonight's stay-up-until-2am-blogathon.

The engines are trying to measure patterns - they're looking for indications of increasing or decreasing relevance and authority that temporal trends provide. There's several specific items they want to identify:

  • Content growth patterns - how often does a particular site tend to add new pages
  • Content update patterns - how often are documents edited and updated
  • Link growth patterns - how often are new links pointing to the site
  • Link stagnation patterns - does the number of links to the site stagnate or decrease

There's also some calculus here - they're not just interested in how many links pointed today vs. yesterday (or how many pages have been added), there's a fundamental interest in tracking patterns over time. Below, I've drawn some graphs showing the rate of new external links (and in the last two instances, pages) created over time, with some speculations about what the trends might indicate.

These assumptions don't neccessarily hold true for every site or instance, but the graphs make it easy to see how temporal link and conten growth information can be used by the engines to make guesses about the relevance or worthiness of a particular site. DMOZ has experienced a relative decline in popularity. While they were once a default reference link for many sites, their relative influence has waned. My experience has also seen them appearing in far fewer competitive rankings that 2-4 years ago they dominated.

The results have been high rankings for some competitive queries in a very competitive sphere (Internet marketing). (BTW - the graphs are obviously not to scale with one another)

This metric makes me think that many forms of spam and manipulative link building are going to stand out like a sore thumb when put under the temporal microscope. When a large gain in links relative to a site's sphere, influence and historical link growth appears, the engines can take a closer look at the source of the links or even trigger┬?a manual review. Common sense would dictate that a small-time local real estate site doesn't usually attract a few thousand new links in a week unless they've done something news or link-worthy.

There's little limit to what the engines can do with data like this, and no reason they shouldn't be analyzing it (since it's easily available). I'd invite you to consider how the link and content growth patterns for your own sites may affect the engines' perspectives on your rankings.
